Ren here. I make theater as a communal ritual: both scripted works and original devised performances where collective creativity can surface. We’re living in a cultural rupture that has severed us from food, labor, imagination, and each other, and I believe in theater as a tool for re-villaging.

I direct plays that range from the ensemble-driven avant-garde (bodies swirling on stage, whimsical and imaginative design elements, colorful fantasia) to the deeply raw, intimate, and relationship-driven.

As a former biologist turned artist, my approach to theater is rooted in experimental inquiry. Where are the boundaries of “theater” and how can I tinker with them? How can I deepen, challenge, and reimagine the audience’s relationship to the performance? In pushing the edges of the theatrical form, I seek to build theatrical worlds that imagine alternative ways of living and the new societies growing in the cracks of a decaying system.

At its deepest core, my work is about love: restoring intimacy, reigniting play, and the radical pleasure of interconnectedness.

Ren (she/they) is a multidisciplinary theater-maker who believes in the power of performance as communal ritual. With a background in biology and education, they pull artistic inspiration from a multitude of experiences ranging from producing all-femme comedy shows, leading multi-week wilderness trips, facilitating movement workshops, and directing theater for youth and community.

Ren’s approach to theater is rooted in inquiry and experimentation, and she is most passionate about directing ensemble-driven works. Recent directing credits include Bunny by Hannah Moscovitch, Mother of Exiles by Jessica Huang, and an original devised piece called The Trash Man. She holds a BS from Wesleyan University.
